Our Initiatives

Seven quiet promises, kept one person at a time.

For our community in the UAE. For the children growing up back home. For the women who hold our families together. For everyone who calls Punnala home.

A list of programmes is just a list, until the moment a young man calls because he has lost his job, or a mother whispers that her son has not been sleeping. The seven initiatives below are not categories — they are seven quiet doors we leave unlocked, all year round.

Initiative 01

Career Support & Guidance

We open doors. For Punnalites navigating the UAE job market — whether you are looking for your first role, considering a switch, or quietly struggling in your current job — we connect you with members who have walked the same path.

  • Confidential one-on-one career conversations
  • Internal referrals across companies in the UAE
  • CV review and interview preparation help
  • Guidance on visa transitions and contracts
Initiative 02

Family & Community Gatherings

Festivals shared in a rented hall mean more than they should. We organise gatherings throughout the year — small enough to feel like family, large enough to remember nobody is alone here.

  • Onam, Eid, Christmas and Vishu celebrations
  • Family picnics and weekend get-togethers
  • Welcome circles for newly arrived Punnalites
  • Senior members' meet-ups and storytelling evenings
Initiative 03

Youth Awareness & Wellbeing

We bring honest, age-appropriate conversations into school halls and family living rooms — about the things that quietly shape a teenager's life: substance abuse, exam pressure, social media, identity, and self-worth.

  • Drug awareness sessions led by counsellors and survivors
  • Mental health workshops for students and parents
  • Peer-mentoring circles led by Punnalite professionals
  • Open Q&A panels with no judgement and no script
Initiative 04

Education & Scholarships

A bright child should never lose a year of education to fees. We aim to identify deserving students from Punnala — quietly, without ceremony — and help cover what stands between them and the next term.

  • Need-based school and college fee assistance
  • Books, uniforms and exam fee support
  • Career counselling for Plus Two students
  • Mentorship pairing with UAE-based professionals
Initiative 05

Mental Health Helpline

Sometimes the bravest thing is to pick up the phone. We are working towards a confidential helpline — a Punnalite voice on the other end, no judgement, no waiting room — for anyone struggling in silence.

  • Confidential WhatsApp and call support
  • Trained Punnalite volunteers and partner counsellors
  • Onward referral to qualified mental health professionals
  • Specific support for first-time pravasis adjusting abroad
Initiative 06

Summer Skill Camps

When schools close for summer, we open something else. Hands-on camps for Punnala's children — coding and AI, public speaking, financial literacy, art, sport and storytelling. The kind of skills no syllabus quite covers, taught by people who came from where they sit.

  • Annual two-week summer programme in Punnala
  • Tracks for ages 10–14 and 15–18
  • Tech, communication, money skills and creative arts
  • UAE-based Punnalites travelling home to teach
Initiative 07

Women's Empowerment

The women of Punnala — the mothers, the sisters, the wives, the breadwinners — hold our families and our village together. We back them with the platforms, skills, and quiet support that lets them rise on their own terms.

  • Skill workshops — tailoring, baking, digital, entrepreneurship
  • Micro-business mentoring and seed support
  • Health awareness — for mothers, daughters, and elders
  • Safe-space circles for women in the UAE diaspora
How this works

No grand budgets. Just a network that shows up.

Most of these initiatives run on the time, calls, and quiet generosity of our committee members and volunteer Punnalites in the UAE. We deliberately keep overheads near zero — what we can do, we do; what we cannot, we look someone in the eye and say so.

Want to help with one of these?

We are always looking for Punnalites who can mentor, teach, or just lend a steady hand. A note is enough — we will reach out.
